This weekend in South Dakota featured the 2009 Girls State Tennis Tournament. Matches were scattered throughout courts in Sioux Falls over Thursday, Friday and Saturday as the student athletes fought cold winds outside, before they were moved inside to finish out play.

After all was said and done Sioux Falls O’Gorman took home the state championship with 718 team points. Rapid City Stevens finished in second place with 668. Watertown had 477 points to round out the top 3.

Senior Theresa Petrasko of Sioux Falls O’Gorman notched her third state singles title after edging out Sydney Moyle a freshman from Rapid City Stevens in the championship match.

Petrasko won the first set 6-3 over Moyle. However in the second set Moyle took off to a quick 5-1 lead, however Petrasko regrouped and tied the second set to 6-6 before finally winning 8-6 in the tie breaker to win her third title.

In the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, Petrasko told staff reporters, “I was focusing too much on the win.” She continued with “…I had to pull myself together, clear my mind and really focus on every point and not dwell on the overall picture.”

Overall the O’Gorman Knights won four of five individual titles and they also picked up a state win in a doubles title. The Stevens Raiders were able to grab the remaining singles title and two doubles titles to cement themselves for the second spot in the state tournament.

Moyle and Petrasko would eventually face off again in the doubles bracket, but Petrasko proved strong again as O’Gorman’s Meg Townsend and Petrasko won in 3 sets.
