FOOTBALL
PHILLIP SIMS, Oscar Smith: Sims became the Virginia High School League’s all-time career passing leader in the Tigers’ 42-0 win over Deep Creek. He now has 9,179 passing yards during his time with Oscar Smith.

DOMICO PHILLIPS, Meadowbrook: In a 56-17 win over Dinwiddie, Phillips complemented his 106 rushing yards with five touchdowns. His lone pass reception resulted in a 64-yard scamper to the end zone.

DOMINIQUE MARSH, Booker T. Washington: Against Granby, Marsh was nearly perfect. He completed 13 of his 16 pass attempts for a staggering seven touchdowns. It is tied for fourth on the Virginia High School League’s list for most scoring tosses in a single game. Newport News’ Jim Hogan still has the top mark of nine, set back in 1966.

WOODSIDE WOLVERINES OFFENSE: The Wing-T offense was flying high on Saturday afternoon. Bethel’s defense was helpless. Despite scoring 35 points, it still lost by more than 30. Woodside totaled 643 yards – 443 rushing – and scored 67 points.

ADE OYALOWO and ED REYNOLDS, Woodberry Forest: The duo combined for 383 rushing yards in a 41-13 win that kept their team unbeaten at 4-0 and handed opposing Collegiate its first loss of the season. Oyalowo led the way with 203.

BEN EDWARDS, York: He should probably reserve a space on the Hot List, because he delivers a solid performance each week. In his first time playing quarterback since an ankle injury, Edwards scored the winning touchdown from one yard out with 3:09 to go. He then sealed the win on defense, intercepting a pass with less than a minute remaining.

SALEM SPARTANS DEFENSE: Home has been sweet to the Spartans. They shut out Cave Spring, 42-0, by limiting the Knights to just 115 total yards. Salem remains unscored upon in its three home contests of 2009.

COREY PATRICK, Tabb: Patrick ran for 207 yards and three touchdowns in Tabb’s 38-17 win over Bay River District foe Lafayette. The Tigers are now 2-3 overall.

LAKE TAYLOR TITANS DEFENSE: The Titans won their fifth straight game with a stifling defense that limited Churchland to 127 total yards. In addition, they recorded nine sacks and had two interceptions – including one by Mario Rowson on the game’s first play.

TAE GILBERT, Franklin County: He was responsible for both of the Eagles’ touchdowns in a Western Valley District opener with William Fleming that win in their favor. Coming off a sprained ankle injury, Gilbert gained 183 yards on 37 carries. His pair of touchdowns was the difference in a 14-7 decision.

DAVID JORDAN, South County: Jordan found the end zone on three occasions – twice in the fourth quarter – to help the Stallions pull away from West Springfield. With a 28-16 win, South County improved to 5-1.

THOMAS KEITH, Osbourn: Keith ran (173) for more yards than he threw (140). He only passed 14 times, completing seven of them – one for a touchdown. The Eagles’ signal caller also scored on the ground as his team rallied to beat Loudoun Valley 39-29.

HOLSTON CAVALIERS DEFENSE: Northwood couldn’t generate much offense against Holston’s group of 11 on the other side of the ball. In fact, the Cavaliers allowed just 75 yards in a 42-7 triumph. This is nothing new, however, as they’d given up a combined 19 points in the previous four contests.

MARC MEIER, Great Bridge: The Wildcats are enjoying their first 6-0 start since 1986. The most recent win came in a 31-14 contest versus Nansemond River. Meier was the recipient of three Brad Hudson touchdown throws as Great Bridge pulled away in the final two quarters.

JARED VELASQUEZ, Robinson: A sluggish first half produced just 26. A strong second half, with 80 yards, lifted the Rams to their sixth win in as many games. An 81-yard punt return set up a key Robinson touchdown.

LARRY JOSHUA, Landstown: Joshua passed for 258 yards and gained 123 more with his legs. In all, he accounted four a quartet of touchdowns against winless Princess Anne. The Eagles improved to 4-2.

LANDSTOWN EAGLES DEFENSE: It wasn’t just offensive stars that shined. The defensive unit limited Princess Anne to zero first downs and just a single yard of total offense.

BASKETBALL
JOSH HENDERSON, Cave Spring: The Vanderbilt Commodores got a verbal commitment from Henderson, who chose the Southeastern Conference school over Davidson. The 6-foot-11 Henderson averaged 15.9 points last season to go along with 10.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game as well as 133 blocked shots in leading the Knights to a Group AA Division 3 title.

VOLLEYBALL
LIZ BRAILSFORD, Patrick Henry: In a key Western Valley District match-up featuring two of its top teams, Brailsford recorded 22 kills and 12 digs to lead her club to a three-set victory against Franklin County. Patrick Henry now sits at 8-4 and unbeaten in league play.

HALEY SHEPHERD, Auburn: Shepherd’s 33-assist performance on Tuesday was enough to pace the Eagles over Glenvar. Auburn improves to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the Three Rivers District.

CASEY BOND AND HANNAH MARTIN, Liberty (Bedford): Bond had 30 digs on Tuesday night, while Martin added 24 more to go along with a whopping 39 assists. Liberty topped Amherst County in a five-setter.

LIZZIE DEANE, Broad Run: The senior was the spark as the Spartans got five consecutive points in the fifth set to tie it at 12 apiece with perennial power Loudoun County. That helped the Spartans shock the Raiders on Oct. 6 for their first win against them since 2003.

WESTFIELD BULLDOGS: Against highly-touted Chantilly, it appeared as if the Bulldogs’ losing streak would hit five. It took just four sets to end it. To the surprise of almost everybody, it was Westfield that was on the winning side.

FIELD HOCKEY
KALA WHITE, Ocean Lakes: In leading the Dolphins to their 10th win in 13 total games, White recorded a hat trick prior to halftime. Maury couldn’t catch up in a 3-2 Ocean Lakes victory on Friday.

CLARISSA CHANDOO, Bishop Sullivan: She scored once and assisted on her team’s other two goals. Chandoo played a major part in a 3-1 win on Friday against Hampton.

KENDALL TOMPKINS, Cape Henry: Tompkins pulled off a hat trick of her own. The Dolphins got to the .500 mark with a shutout of Nansemond-Suffolk.

KENDELL COMBS, Lakeland: The Cavaliers are 12-1, and one major reason for that is Combs’ offensive success this year. She put in four goals on Wednesday, bringing her season total to 22.

NATNAEL MESERET, Robert E. Lee (Springfield): The Lancer senior posted a career-best 15:39 at the 3.05-mile trace at Bull Run Regional Park in Manassas. The native of Ethiopia won the Glory Days Grill Invitational on Saturday with a successful final charge to the front.

BOYS SOCCER
JASPER STEENDAM, Norfolk Collegiate: Neither team scored in regulation during the match between Norfolk Collegiate and Peninsula Catholic. Then, Steendam put up a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of overtime. The Oaks moved above the .500 mark with a 2-0 win.

GOLF
BEN FIREBAUGH, William Byrd: After many near wins throughout his career, Firebaugh finally got to finish on top. This year, he had five runner-ups, but with birdies on three par-4s and final round total of 70, the senior claimed his first major championship trophy by three strokes in the Region III tournament.

ANNA WALKER, Marion: Walker earned medalist honors by shooting an 80 at the Virginia High School League Zone 3 Girls qualifier on Oct. 5. She was one of six whose performance at Auburn Hills Golf Club qualified them for the state tournament.
