A week ago I was able to catch up with Cory Jacobsen who is the starting quarterback for the Viborg Vikings. Cory has recently led his team over Centerville and Viborg is now 5-1 on the season. Check out the interview as we talk football, playing 9 man, Cory’s other interests, and playing Kobe Bryant in horse
Jordan Gillis, Coaches Aid: Hello Cory how are you doing?

Cory Jacobsen looks to get the ball back into his hands
Cory Jacobsen, Viborg: I am doing great!
JG: So far this season the Viborg Vikings are 4-1, and coming off a 56-28 win over Menno, what can you say about the season so far?
CJ: The season so far has been great. We have been playing and learning together as a team through out the season.
JG: As a junior what have you learned so far this year that you think will help you the rest of this season and next year?
CJ: This year I have learned to take a bigger role with my leadership. I like setting good examples to my teammates and to younger players on the team. Leadership is a major asset to our team and will be for the rest of this year and next year.
JG: Last week you led Viborg as QB over Menno on the road to a score of 56-28. You threw 2 TDs and ran for two more. What can you say about the game?
CJ: Last weeks game was a fun one. The first half was back and forth, and back and forth some more. We just couldn’t get the defensive stop we needed. Second half was one of our best second halves of the year both offensively and defensively. Offensively, we powered the football left and right. Our front line did a tremendous job for our runners. Defensively, we came out more physical and that’s what won it for us. The team who was going to win the second half was going to win and we did just that.
JG: What do you prefer to play on game day, a pocket passer, or a scrambling QB? Why?
CJ: Both are really essential to my game, but if I could pick one it would be a pocket passer. I like breaking down defenses with short passes but also like executing with big plays as well.
JG: You play on a 9 man football team, what do you think is those most different other than have two less men on the field? Do you think you would have issues adjusting to 11-man if you play in college?
CJ: Adjusting to 11-man would be a change for me but I am not the one to back down. I would definitely do it if the opportunity comes.
JG: This Friday you are playing home against Centerville, what kind of game plan do you have for this week’s game?
CJ: Its our homecoming this week so more of our excitement is going to come from that. But our game plan is to reduce mistakes, penalties and giving up big plays. Stay solid on both ends and dominate as much as we can.
JG: How do you feel about Viborg’s rest of the season and the road to the playoffs? The goal is always state, what will it take for the Vikings to reach state?
CJ: We are excited for playoffs but we have two more games left on our schedule. We have a big game next week against Irene-Wakonda. This game is huge for us because it is for the Tri-Valley Conference Title. We are focused on that and only that until playoffs come. Winning our last two games would give us a major boost. When playoffs come we hope we are hosting all of the games in Viborg. Also, it’s going to take confidence with in ourselves to get to where we want to be.
JG: Outside of football do you play any other sports? If so what is your favorite to play?
CJ: Yes, I basketball. I’d have to say football and basketball are my favorite sports but if I had to pick one, it would be basketball.
JG: Besides sports do you have any other hobbies or favorite activities you like to do?
CJ: I really enjoy listening to music and finding new songs to listen to. All types of music works for me.
JG: As a Junior its quite a ways away, but have you thought about your athletic future in college?
CJ: Yes I have. And it is very hard to see how my plans workout at the position I am in.
JG: And finally if you could spend the day with any athlete (live or dead) who would you want to spend the day with, and what would you like to do?
CJ: Kobe Bryant, hands down. I would just like to talk with him about everything and maybe play a game of horse.
Cory wouldn’t answer who would win in horse between himself and Kobe, but he was an awesome interview. Among being a great quarterback and leader for his team, he is also very well spoken. I wish the best of luck to Viborg as they trek on the way to a state championship.
