Close to 200 of the top high school girls’ golfers in South Carolina will hit the links early next week for the opportunity to play for the state title.
The Upper State qualifier will be played Oct. 19 at Northwoods Golf Club in Columbia. Seventeen teams of four and 10 individuals will play. The Lower State qualifier will be held Oct. 20 at the Camden Country Club and features 17 teams and two individuals. Each starts at 9:30 a.m.
The six lowest scoring teams in each qualifier will advance to the state finals being held at Quail Creek Golf Club in Conway on Oct. 26-27. Additionally, any individual shooting 90 or lower and not on a qualifying team goes to states.
Riverside is the two-time defending state champion, and all four top medalists from the 2008 state finals – Greenville’s Louise Oxner, Strom Thurmond’s, Anne Marie Covar and McKenzie Talbert and A.C. Flora’s Alex Van Dine – are competing this weekend. Austin Ernst of Seneca, who was the 2007 state champion, also is in the field.
