The Battle of the Hawks

After a tough loss on the road last Friday to #1 ranked Dowling Catholic, the #3 ranked Ankeny Hawks were ready for a victory on Friday night. They were host to #9 ranked Urbandale J-Hawks for the “Battle of the Hawks.”

Both teams held each other from scoring in the first quarter. The J-Hawks scored first in the second quarter with a 28-yard field goal by Grae Herold. The field goal gave Urbandale a 3-0 lead over Ankeny at the end of the first half.

Ankeny scored early in the second half with a 1-yard run by Seth Naylor, for the only touchdown of the night. The score put Ankeny, 7-3 over Urbandale. Ankeny then held Urbandale from scoring any additional points down to the very end of fourth quarter regulation.

The cold, rainy weather made the condition of the field difficult for play during the game. Urbandale had nine fumbles and Ankeny had three.

The J-Hawks had a total of 176 yard rushing. Runningback Jevoury Wedderburn ran for 134 yards and quarterback Chad Gilson ran for 41 yards. Gilson also threw for 56 yards.

The Hawks’ relied on their running plays during the game. They finished the game with a total of 139 yards rushing. Runningback Tyler Leo had a total of 91 yards, Joel Lanning had 25 yards, Rob Meyers had 14 yards and Seth Naylor had 13 yards.

As a result of the loss to the Hawks, the J-Hawks are now 5-1 for the regular season and are ranked #10 in this week’s rankings by Coaches Aid Iowa. Not only was the win a regular season victory for the Hawks but the win also marks a 10-game winning streak against the J-Hawks.

In Week 7 Ankeny plays on the road at Indianola and Urbandale hosts #1 ranked Dowling Catholic, both games on Friday.
