GEORGE WASHINGTON at RIVERSIDE, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Warriors (4-2) are coming off a two game road stint, the last one ending in a loss to the still undefeated, top-ranked Brooke Bruins, 0-27. After being shut out on the road the Warriors will not get much of a break as they defend their home field against the George Washington Patriots (4-2). The Warriors will need a stellar performance on the ground and through the air to beat George Washington whose defense, and running attack has been superb all year.
HURRICANE at RIPLEY, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Redskins (3-3) are healthy and appear to be getting in synch. Hurricane started off the season with frequent miscues that often led to turnovers and punts. Now that the quarterback situation is a little less muddy, with Tyler Pate the clear front-runner, the Redskins have pulled off back-to-back victories. Pate has earned his wings, passing for 529 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. The Redskins travel to Ripley (5-1) this weekend to take on the Vikings who saw their five-game winning streak come to an abrupt end last weekend on the road against a vengeful South Charleston (last year’s state champs, they lost in a heavy rain storm to big-time rival Capital), 0-35.
SCOTT at WAYNE, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Scott (4-2) had a beautiful start to their season, but it all ended with losses to Westside (5-1) and James Monroe (4-1). The Skyhawks bounced back last weekend in their victory over Logan (1-4), a Class AAA team. Wayne (5-0) has been steady all year, and is poised to take the number one ranking if they can hold out a loss against a very difficult Scott team at home.
UNIVERSITY at BROOKE, Friday, 7 p.m.
The Hawks (5-1) suffered their first taste of defeat last weekend on the road to top-ranked and undefeated Fairmont Senior (5-0). They get no break, as they travel again to play the also top-ranked and undefeated Brooke Bruins (5-0) this weekend. The Hawks were able to beat Brooke at home last year, 20-19, but that was a home game and Brooke was on a seven game losing streak that ended their season.
WIRT COUNTY at WAHAMA, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Tigers (4-1) have emerged as big time players in Class A play. Despite losing early in the season to St. Mary’s (2-4), 27-33, they have managed to decimate their opponents in every other instance. They will have to put on their “A” game (no pun intended) this weekend though, as they face the number three ranked Wahama Falcons (5-0). Wahama has managed to outscore its opponents, 165-55, in five games.
PIKEVIEW at WESTSIDE, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Panthers (4-2) are coming off a tough road game win, 28-26, against the Summer County Bobcats (1-4). Perhaps the most impressive Panthers win this season was at home two weeks ago versus Shady Spring (4-2). The Panthers won by a touchdown, 21-14, to break a two game losing streak. A Panthers win this week at Westside would be a season changing event for the Panthers—a definite playoff contender at this juncture—but it won’t come easy. The Renegades (5-1) traveled to Mount View last weekend and won, 62-8.
VALLEY (FAYETTE) at MOUNT HOPE, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Valley Greyhounds finished their 2008-09 season with a record of 3-7. They lost at home to Mount Hope in game six, 0-44. This year, a much improved Valley Greyhounds (3-2), will face Mount Hope again, but this time on the road. The Mustangs are looking for their third win in a row, last losing at Iaeger, 14-16.
SHADY SPRING at SHERMAN, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Shady Spring’s Tigers (4-2) won their last game against winless Oak Hill, 30-15. This weekend they will face the undefeated Sherman Tide for their second home game in a row. The Tigers will be looking to find their way into a playoff spot in a very competitive 2009 Class AA division. The fact that this is a home game should help, but the Tide (5-0) has dominated in most of their games this season. If the Tigers hope to contain the Tide, they should take a look at the tapes from Sherman’s 6-0 victory over Liberty (Raleigh) two weeks ago. In its other four games this season, Liberty has scored 35+ points.
PARKERSBURG at PARKERSBURG SOUTH, Friday, 7:30 p.m
Parkersburg South (3-3) lost its first three games of the season, but has managed to salvage a potential playoff berth winning its last three games. The Patriots hope to keep their streak alive this Friday when they play host to their neighbors, the Big Reds (3-3). Star runningback Allan Wasonga and his teammates will attempt to rebound after losing in a close battle to the other Patriots, George Washington. The Big Reds slipped away in the fourth quarter largely as a result of turnovers and their inability to contain running back Felix Mollet.
SOUTH HARRISON at LIBERTY (HARRISON), Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The South Harrison Hawks (4-2) travel to Liberty to face the Mountaineers (0-6). The Mountaineers have the distinct advantage of being a slightly larger Class AA school, whereas the Hawks are a Class A school. That has not stopped this matchup from becoming a bitter rivalry though. In 2008-09, the Liberty Mountaineers (0-6) played at South Harrison and lost 0-33. The year before that, the Mountaineers won at home, 21-6. They get their chance at redemption this year at home, and will attempt to break a six game losing streak, winless season.
