Trinity senior Josh Sewell will sign a national letter of intent with Miami (Ohio) University on Wednesday, the first day of the Fall Signing Period for prospective NCAA student-athletes. He is the Louisville area’s first Division I signee.
“I am so excited for Josh,” said head coach Mike Szabo. “He made a great decision to attend Miami of Ohio, which has a great academic reputation as well as an outstanding basketball program in the Mid American Conference.”

Sewell is a top candidate for the Mr. Basketball award in the state of Kentucky for the 2009-10 season.
Sewell has led the Shamrocks to two 20-win seasons during his first three years with the Shamrocks and has positioned himself to become the school’s all-time leading scorer and the eighth member of Trinity’s 1,000-point club.
“Josh is an excellent student, a great teammate and is one of the most talented players I have ever coached,” said Szabo. “He can do so many things on the court and can play multiple positions. Josh truly loves the game and enjoys the challenge of getting better every day. Josh has added speed and strength to his 6’4” frame; he will be a force and tough for anyone to defend. I look forward to him leading our team here at Trinity High School in this, his senior year. I believe he is the best player in the state of Kentucky.”
Szabo has coached many players that have excelled at both the collegiate and professional levels, including former NBA star Evan Eschmeyer and NFL star Brian Brohm, among many others.
Led by Sewell, the Trinity Shamrocks will open the 2009-10 season on December 4 against Shelby County in Steinhauser Gymnasium. It will also mark the debut of a new playing surface for the facility. After registering a 22-8 mark a year ago, the second most wins in program history, Trinity looks to improve on its semifinal finish in the 2009 Class Act Federal Credit Union Seventh Region Tournament as the season begins.
Sewell enters his final season with the Shamrocks with 890 career points in 83 games. Sewell registered 457 points last season in 30 games. It was the most points in a single season by a Trinity player since Tanner Jacobs had 493 points in 29 games during the 2006-07 season.
Sewell made a verbal commitment to coach Charlie Coles and the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks over the summer. Miami (Ohio) is located in Oxford, Ohio. If the 2009-10 schedule for the Redhawks is any indication, Sewell will be able to showcase his talents across the nation against some of the country’s best basketball programs. The Redhawks will travel to Kentucky, New Mexico, Xavier and Cincinnati while hosting Dayton.
