Week 5 Rankings

Coachesaid ranks teams in all eight classes

By Kent McDill

Following Week 5 action, the new Illinois high school football rankings are out. Here is a description of the changes that were made from Week 4:

Class 8A

The top three teams remained the same: Maine South, Lincoln-Way East and Fremd, all unbeaten teams. But Gurnee Warren dropped from fourth to eighth place because of their too-close 43-42 win over Lake Forest.

Bolingbrook moved up to No. 4, and Belleville East, Mount Carmel and Naperville Central all moved up because of Palatine’s loss to Schaumburg.

Moving into the top 10 in Class 8A were Loyola Academy and Glenbard North.

Class 7A

St. Rita and Glenbard West remained at 1-2, but Prospect lost for the first time, big, to Buffalo Grove, and dripped to No. 9. Filling in behind Glenbard West were Wheaton-Warrenville South, Geneva and Rockford Boylan. Crystal Lake South moved up to No. 6 with Hononegah’s loss, Newcomers Glenbrook North and St. Charles North moved into No. 7 and No. 8. Hononegah was reinstated into 10th spot.

Class 6A

Lemont’s 16-10 loss to Hillcrest (now No. 6 in Class 5A) allowed East St. Louis to move up to its expected No. 1 position despite its two losses to Ohio teams.

Cary-Grove and Danville are Nos. 2 and 3.

Lemont moved down to No. 5, but Thornridge and St. Viator both dropped out of the list due to losses. Rock Island is now No. 9 and Peoria Richwoods moved into the No. 10 spot.

Class 5A

The top eight stayed the same with wins, led by Sacred Heart Griffin. Nazareth moved into No. 9 and Kankakee dropped one spot to No. 10 after the loss to Crete-Monee (ranked sixth in Class 6A). Sycamore dropped out after a loss to Geneva.

Class 4A

Rochester remains No. 1 and Bloomington Central Catholic is No. 2. Bishop McNamara dropped to No. 5 after its loss to St. Rita (No. 1 in Class 7A). Coal City dropped out, while Rock Island Alleman moved into the No. 10 spot.

Class 3A

The top seven remained the same with Wilmington on top. North Boone dropped out, while unbeatens Sherrard and Sesser-Valier moved into the top 10.

Class 2A

The list remained the same from top to bottom, led by Bureau Valley.

Class 1A

Brown County beat No. 10 Routt Catholic and remained No. 1. Cerro Gordo dropped from No. 4 to No. 7 with a loss to Arthur, while Pawnee and Routt Catholic dropped out to make room for Lena-Winslow, Jamaica-Sidell-Salt Fork and Freeport Aquin.
