Volleyball playoffs update

This UIL state volleyball tournaments is set for Nov. 19-21 (Thursday-Saturday) in San Marcos. Here are some notable results through the first four rounds.

Bidistrict

There were few upsets of note in the opening round. Most ranked teams in classes A-3A had bidistrict byes, and nearly all the ranked teams that did play won.

The most significant losses came in 4A, where 15th-ranked Elgin fell 3-2 (10-25, 25-17, 25-19, 17-25, 15-11) to Waller; and 5A, where Fort Bend Dulles ousted defending Region III-5A champion League City Clear Creek 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-15).

Area

Through Thursday's matches (Nov. 6), the highest-ranked teams to be eliminated are Gunter, Dripping Springs, Cuero and Allen.

Gunter, ranked No. 7 in Class 2A, fell to 21st-ranked Pottsboro 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 26-24). Dripping Springs, No. 8 in 4A, dropped a 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-19, 26-24, 15-9) decision to unranked Seguin. Cuero, No. 11 in 3A, also was taken out by another ranked team, No. 22 La Grange, 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-10). And in 5A, No. 12 Allen  lost 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 16-14) to unranked Coppell, which has been in and out of the Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings all season.

UPDATE (Nov. 8): The highest-ranked team to exit is now No. 5 Decatur, which was bumped out of the 3A playoffs by No. 23 Burnet 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 25-20).

On the other hand, of the 30 teams ranked Nos. 21-25 in the five classes (each has a tie for 25th), only 14 remain alive through two rounds.

Regional quarterfinals

The sometimes sad quirks of the bracket begin to kick in this week. The should-have-been-later matchups are led by No. 1 San Antonio Reagan vs. No. 4 San Antonio O'Connor at 7;30 p.m. Tuesday in Region IV-5A at the UTSA Convocation Center. The top-ranked Rattlers needed five sets to down the Panthers in a season-opening match.

Other third-round contests pairing highly ranked teams include:

  • II-5A: No. 2 Round Rock Westwood vs. No. 6 The Woodlands College Park
  • IV-4A: No. 3 Lake Travis vs. No. 6 Cibolo Steele
  • III-2A: No. 2 White Oak vs. No. 8 Jewitt Leon
  • IV-2A: No. 4 Weimar vs. No. 6 Poth
  • IV-A: No. 6 Santa Gertrudis Academy vs. No. 8 Shiner

UPDATE (Nov. 11): Top-ranked San Antonio Reagan is out, dumped Tuesday night in a Region IV-5A third-round match at the UTSA Convocation Center by No. 4 San Antonio O'Connor 3-1 (25-27, 27-25, 25-15, 25-21). The Panthers had lost 10 in a row to the Rattlers, including a season-opening five-game setback as well as a loss in this playoff round a year ago.

In the other third-round matches highlighted above, Westwood defeated College Park 3-2 (25-20,25-27,16-25,25-18,15-10); Lake Travis swept Steele 3-0 (25-20,26-24,25-19); White Oak outlasted Leon 3-2 (25-18,22-25,15-25,25-14,15-7); Poth bounced Weimar 3-0 (25-15,25-20,25-11); and Shiner eliminated Santa Gertrudis 3-0 (25-17,25-20,25-23).

Also, in a match inadvertently omitted from the original list, 3A No. 2 Monahans downed No. 4 Dalhart 3-2 (25-16,24-26,23-25,25-19,15-11).

The No. 1 team also is out in 2A, where Bushland fell to No. 11 Denver City 3-1 (13-25,26-24,25-20,25-22).
